Graphical installer works, but aint pretty.

Friday I placed what I currently have for a Graphical installer onto the LiveCDs I have been making. It works but it sure is not pretty. I have also been able to build both 32 and 64Bit ISOs. Things are slowly progressing. The installer is written in PyQt4 and has a built in auto partitoning option (auto-part) that works but could use a lot more work as well. In the next few days as things improve I will post these as projects on dev.synergy-linux.com and give them a SVN commit.

Another thing I have been working on is razor-qt in what spare time (like now) I have found. In case you don’t know razor-qt is a desktop environment written for Qt4 and is light very weight. My hopes are this will work even better then KDE4 on EeePCs and I can make it an option much more sooner then something like kde3. In fact it may even replace a need to build kde3 if it’s stable enough. We’ll see.

Posting from the little EeePC running Synergy Linux (Code named: GreenTooth). This is on what will be Synergy Linux 3. We’re still very pre Alpha still but things are coming along. This release is not just for EeePC’s don’t get me wrong but still feel like I have some loose ends to tie up from the EeePCLinuxOS days. So far I have the compressed install working with a changes overlay (with some intervention) all I need to do now is change some media creator code and do some more testing, then I will work on the rather large task of still trying to use anaconda for a normal install. After that I hit Alpha status and then go into the more organized tasks on dev.synergy-linux.com of porting Mandriva Control Center and various other major packages I may be missing (Java, libreoffice etc..). So here goes!

First window Manager DWM

We have had the ability to build a CLI based ISO for a while now. However install has been rather tricky. This is because Syenrgy Linux does not offer any selinux packages. We have completely stripped out SELinux from our core packages. Up until a few weeks ago this meant a broken anaconda and a broken install. Also we do not offer FCOE (FibeChannel Over Ehternet) which is built into Anaconda and if not found will crash anaconda. A few weeks ago though I put a little work into stripping SELinux and FCOE out of anaconda and was able to do a CLI install. So to take my own medicine I installed a CLI version of Synergy on my home machine. Now I still have a few laptops running older Synergy Respins (Synergy 2) based on Fedora 15 so I’m not completely KDE less. Even though having one machine being all CLI wasn’t much of a hassle to make things even better I packaged DWM a very lightweight window manager (with few dependencies) and was able to get Firefox 8 up and running. So now my desktop machine is still pretty much a desktop machine and as long as I leave a Firefox window open is still pretty much functional for the rest of the family. I have built 3 Xorg drivers ATI, Vesa and Intel, nouvea is coming here shortly. Intel, Nvidia and ATI cards pretty much have the market so those will be my focus for testing when I get something a little more desktop intensive (ie. KDE 4.8) done.

Work.. Starts to pay off..

I just finished packaging a majority of the “core” packages needed to build a CLI based ISO. I have also weeded out the SELinux (Build)Requires in all the “core” packages and rebuilt the kernel (3.1.0) adding various drivers and turning off SELinux. Although it’s not really useful at this point the ISO can be used. You can actually get online if you manually set up your connection. There’s still alot of work to do, but we’re getting there.

Working in the Background

It’s been almost a month since my last post. I might have some people worried. There’s no reason to fear I have not been sippin’ lemonade and sleeping in a hammock. Nope not at all. I have been working on a Fedora rebase and a few other goodies. One of which I will give you now.. the developer site:

Synergy Linux “Core” rpms and System

Sometime tomorrow the build server should finish the final rpm for the Synergy Linux Core System. This “Core” will be the system Synergy Linux 3 will be based off of. A lot of these rpms have just been cleaned up from Fedora 16. We have removed epochs and fedora specific macros. More work will be done to tweak Synergy Linux further into being it’s own official Linux Distribution. Maybe then (After 2 releases) we’ll finally get on DistroWatch I kid. I plan to group rpms by “Core System” “X Based System” and “KDE Desktop” We’ll see how that turns out though. So far it’s been pretty easy, I have written some bash scripts to automate the process pretty well. Hopefully by next week I will have a simple text based ISO.

Zif Imported to repository

I imported and updated Zif today, incase you’re wondering Zif is a package management system that can work with the currently installed yum. Unfortunately Yum works very slowly with PackageKit, so zif was written to manager and install packages with PackageKit’s Zif backend (intead of Yum’s) on RedHat based machines while not conflicting with Yum, so the Admin or User can have the best of both worlds. Fast PackageKit and Yum. Current version in the Synergy repos is 0.2.3
